Durham Region Reminds Drivers to Leave One Metre When Passing Cyclists

Durham Region has issued a reminder to drivers to leave at least one metre of space when passing cyclists or e-bike riders on local roads. According to the Region, motorists may cross the centre line to pass a cyclist if it is safe and legal. If this is not possible, drivers are required to wait behind the cyclist until a safe passing opportunity is available.

The one metre passing law is intended to apply throughout the region and aims to clarify the rules for both drivers and cyclists. The Region provided this guidance to inform residents about expectations and legal requirements related to road safety.

Durham Region stated that cyclists are not required to keep a specific one metre space when riding, but they must obey all the rules of the road. The Region also advised cyclists to stay aware of their surroundings, particularly when vehicles are passing, and to maintain a safe position while riding.

Further information about the one metre passing law can be found on durham.ca/OneMetre. The Region referenced its Durham Vision Zero Strategic Road Safety Action Plan in connection with these road safety announcements.
