Durham Region Schedules Annual Nuclear Alert System Test for June 3 and 4
The Region of Durham will conduct its annual test of the nuclear public alerting system on June 3 and 4, 2025. According to Durham Region, the system is intended to warn people in the event of an emergency at the nuclear-generating stations in Clarington or Pickering.
Durham Region states that it is required to test the Nuclear Public Alerting System as directed by the Provincial Nuclear Emergency Response Plan (PNERP). Residents living near the nuclear stations may experience these alert tests during daytime hours over two days.
On June 3, an auto dialer will call listed landline phone numbers within 10 kilometres of the nuclear-generating stations. Durham Region advises that these calls will appear from the number 905-666-6291.
On June 4, Durham Region reports that outdoor sirens will sound for up to one minute. The sirens are positioned within three kilometres of the stations and are intended to be heard by people outdoors in the area.
According to Durham Region, this is only a test. No action is required if residents receive a phone call on June 3 or hear the sirens on June 4. The Region instructs that, in a real emergency, residents should go indoors and tune into trusted local media outlets or government channels for further instructions.
