Durham Region is scheduled to hold three Environment Days drop-off events from 8 a.m. to noon: Saturday, June 13 in Whitby, Saturday, Aug. 22 in Cannington, and Saturday, Oct. 3 in Port Perry, according to a notice on the Region’s website.

The Region says the events are set up as one-stop drop-offs where residents can donate certain items for reuse, bring electronic waste for recycling, and drop off household hazardous waste.

The June 13 event is planned for the Whitby Operations Centre, 333 McKinney Drive, Whitby. The Aug. 22 event is listed for the Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre, 91 Elliot Street, Cannington. The Oct. 3 event is scheduled for the Municipal Boat Launch parking lot, 2 Old Rail Lane, Port Perry. Durham Region says each event will run rain or shine.

Accepted reuse donations include clean, dry and odourless clothing and textiles, shoes, bedding, and small household items and sporting goods in working condition.

Residents must remove any materials refused by charities. Durham Region says refused items may be disposed of at one of the Region’s waste management facilities, where standard fees may apply.

Electronic waste will also be accepted for recycling. Examples listed by the Region include cell phones, audio and video players, VCRs, DVD and Blu-Ray players, stereos, computers, televisions, cameras and radios.

Household hazardous waste will also be accepted. Examples include antifreeze, batteries, brake fluid, motor oil and filters, fluorescent light bulbs and tubes, cooking oil, medication and mercury thermostats.

Commercial, institutional, agricultural or industrial waste is not permitted.

Durham Region also encourages residents to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to a local food bank.
