Durham Region Transit Committee Names Vice-Chair and Announces Transit Updates at June Meeting

Members of the Durham Region Transit Executive Committee met in Whitby on June 4 to discuss recent updates regarding Durham Region Transit services. The committee's agenda included the appointment of a new Vice-Chair, results from the 2025 Customer Service Survey, an update on the electric bus program, and a new service agreement with Ontario Power Generation.

The information presented offers riders details about changes in transit leadership, results on customer satisfaction, future service plans, and new initiatives potentially affecting travel options in the region.

Commissioner Garrod was named Vice-Chair of the Transit Executive Committee. During the meeting, Regional Councillor Marilyn Crawford, who chairs the committee, offered congratulations on the appointment.

According to Durham Region Transit, results from the 2025 Customer Service Survey indicated a 70 per cent overall satisfaction rating. Respondents highlighted safety and comfort as key strengths. The survey also noted areas identified for improvement by riders, including on-time performance, transfer times, and real-time communication.

Bill Holmes, General Manager of Durham Region Transit, said that feedback from customers is considered in future planning.

The committee reported that Durham Region Transit will receive 25 new battery-electric buses in 2026. These buses are scheduled to operate from the DRT East Depot in Oshawa.

A new service agreement between Durham Region Transit and Ontario Power Generation will result in the launch of a dedicated employee shuttle in the fall. This shuttle will connect OPG and the Durham College Oshawa GO Station. Meeting materials state that this is DRT’s first employer-specific shuttle service.

Further details from the June 4 meeting are available on the Durham Region Transit website.
