Durham Region Transit Employees May Strike as of June 7

Durham Region Transit (DRT) has stated that its front-line employees, represented by Unifor Local 222, will be in a legal strike position as of June 7, 2025, following 12 days of contract negotiations that have not produced a new collective agreement.

DRT advised customers that a service disruption could occur if a labour action is taken by Unifor Local 222. The status was made possible after Unifor requested a No Board Report from the Ministry of Labour, which was issued on May 21, 2025.

Bill Holmes, General Manager of Durham Region Transit, said in a statement that while productive discussions have taken place to improve working conditions, DRT cannot currently provide certainty or assurances about whether or when a service disruption may happen. Holmes noted that a legal strike position does not mean a disruption will occur on June 7, only that it is possible from that date.

DRT stated it will share more information about any possible labour disruption as details become available. Customers are encouraged by DRT to visit DurhamRegionTransit.com/updates for ongoing information about service changes.
