Durham Region Transit Introduces Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program
Durham Region Transit (DRT) has introduced the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, according to an announcement from DRT. The program is intended to support passengers with disabilities that may not be immediately visible.
DRT reports that passengers participating in the program can wear a Sunflower symbol, such as on a lanyard or badge, to indicate they may need additional assistance or patience during their transit journey.
DRT has stated that the program is voluntary for riders. Transit staff and operators have received training from DRT about recognizing the Sunflower symbol and responding to participants appropriately.
The Sunflower symbol is internationally recognized as indicating a non-visible disability. DRT notes that similar initiatives have been adopted by other organizations and transit agencies in Canada and internationally.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program is currently available to passengers using DRT services throughout Durham Region, including in Clarington.
