Durham Region Transit to End Bus Service Early June 6 Amid Possible Strike
Durham Region Transit (DRT) will end all scheduled bus service by 11 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2025, due to the potential for a strike by Unifor Local 222, according to the Regional Municipality of Durham. The Region stated that unionized transit operators will be in a legal strike position as of 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2025, following ongoing collective bargaining that began on March 31, 2025.
The change to bus service hours may affect residents who rely on DRT buses in Durham Region, particularly those traveling late on June 6. The possible service disruption is linked to the lack of a new collective agreement between DRT and Unifor Local 222.
DRT advised customers to check the detailed listings of last trips on its website and to make alternative transportation arrangements if necessary. According to DRT, if Unifor members do not go on strike on June 7, regular bus service is expected to resume on that day. However, while unionized operators will be legally able to strike beginning June 7, there is no confirmation from the Region that a work stoppage will occur. DRT has stated that service updates will be posted on its website as more information becomes available.
