Durham Region warns of reduced visibility; pedestrian and cyclist collisions peak October–December

Durham Region is advising residents to use extra caution on local roads as daylight hours shorten, saying the highest number of pedestrian- and cyclist-involved collisions occur from October to December. The region-wide advisory, which applies to Clarington, was issued Oct. 14 and outlines safety steps for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Reduced visibility during darker morning and evening commutes can make people walking or cycling harder to see, especially at intersections.

For drivers, the Region advises paying special attention to crosswalks and sidewalks leading to intersections, even when facing a green light. The Region also advises reducing speed and ensuring the full headlight system is turned on. Drivers are further advised to double-check for pedestrians and cyclists when turning left or right.

For pedestrians, the Region advises crossing at intersections with a traffic control device, such as a traffic signal, stop sign or pedestrian crossover. The Region advises making eye contact with motorists before crossing to ensure drivers have seen you. The Region also advises wearing bright or reflective clothing during darker hours and avoiding headphones or phones and other devices while crossing. The Region advises pedestrians to wait until traffic has come to a complete stop before stepping into the roadway.

For cyclists, Durham Region advises obeying all traffic laws and responsibilities as a road user. Cyclists are advised to turn on headlamps and taillights at least 30 minutes before sunset. The Region also advises using reflective gear and clothing to increase visibility and remaining alert without wearing headphones while riding.

Durham Region directed residents to its Vision Zero webpage (durham.ca/VisionZero) for more information about road safety initiatives.
