Durham Regional Police Introduce New K9 Unit Team to D Platoon
Constable Thanujaan (TJ) Thavaseelan and Police Service Dog Kobe will begin patrolling Durham Region as part of the Durham Regional Police Service’s K9 Unit, according to a June 25 announcement from Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS). DRPS stated that Thavaseelan and Kobe have completed basic patrol certification and will serve with D platoon.
DRPS reported that Kobe is a 21-month-old German Shepherd who was born in the Czech Republic. According to the announcement, the team underwent 14 weeks of training in tracking, building searches, evidence recovery, and obedience. The service stated that Kobe weighs 78 pounds and is among the two largest dogs in the unit. DRPS described Kobe as the quietest dog in the group, a trait used during building searches and tracking.
The service added that while off duty, Kobe plays fetch and tug-of-war with Thavaseelan and prefers a KONG ball on a rope. DRPS did not provide further details about deployments or schedules for the new K9 team.
