Durham Regional Police Launch 2025 Youth in Policing Summer Initiative

The Durham Regional Police Service launched the Youth in Policing Summer Initiative on July 2, 2025. According to DRPS, 100 students and 10 team leaders were selected out of 1,365 applicants from across Durham Region for the paid program, which is open to youth aged 15 to 18.

The program is coordinated with the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services and offers participants training, certifications, and involvement in community events throughout the summer. This information was outlined in an official announcement from DRPS.

DRPS states that participants will attend presentations from police units and community organizations, receive training, and lead a range of initiatives. These include the Newcomer Soccer Tournament (organized with the Community Development Council Durham), the Ripple Effect Youth Forum, a Wellness Event, Junior YIP Camp, Operation GIVE Event, community fundraisers, the CAN Conference, and work with the YIP Program Media Team.

DRPS reports that this year’s program includes a fundraising effort for Footprints 4 Autism and the Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre, with a target of $10,000.

According to DRPS, alumni of the Youth in Policing program have gone on to careers in policing, public service, and other leadership roles.

Applications are open for the 2025–26 Winter Youth in Policing Initiative. DRPS notes that applications for student positions close on August 11, 2025, and for team leader positions on August 22, 2025. A virtual information session will be held on July 14, 2025, with details to be posted on the DRPS Youth in Policing Instagram account.
