Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit Construction to Start August 2025 in Ajax
Construction of the first segment of the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit (DSBRT) system on Kingston Road (Highway 2) in Ajax will begin on August 5, 2025, and is expected to continue until the end of 2026, according to Durham Region Transit.
The project is part of a 36-kilometre bus corridor running through Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, and Toronto. Durham Region Transit states that, once completed, the DSBRT system will include two-way bus service every five minutes, dedicated median bus-only lanes, transit stop platforms, and priority traffic signals. The agency also reports anticipated time savings of 20 minutes for transit trips along the Highway 2 corridor.
The construction zone will extend along Kingston Road from approximately 300 metres west of Harwood Avenue to Galea Drive in Ajax. Planned work includes road reconstruction, installation of median bus lanes, construction of transit stop platforms and shelters, upgrades to traffic signals, and watermain and sanitary sewer installation. Additional features cited by Durham Region Transit are in-boulevard cycle tracks with crossrides, wider accessible sidewalks, street lighting, and landscaping improvements.
According to Durham Region Transit, businesses along Kingston Road in the affected area will remain open throughout the construction period. Information about what businesses can expect during construction is available from Durham Region at durham.ca/OpenForBusiness.
Funding for the DSBRT project comes in part from the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and Durham Region through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
