Durham Transit Executive Committee Notes Accessibility Program, New Pickering Facility, and Service Updates
Members of the Durham Region Transit Executive Committee met in Whitby on May 7 to review recent initiatives and updates related to Durham Region Transit (DRT).
The updates addressed new accessibility options, facility improvements in Pickering, and DRT’s outreach to seniors in Uxbridge. These topics were included on the committee’s agenda to inform the public about developments affecting local transit users.
During the meeting, DRT officially launched the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. This initiative provides Sunflower-branded pins or lanyards to customers with non-visible disabilities who wish to discreetly signal that they may need additional assistance. The pins and lanyards are available to order for free from DRT’s website or by phone.
The committee reported on an event held with seniors in Uxbridge on April 23. According to DRT, the session was organized to gather feedback and answer questions about available transit options for older adults in the community.
A new bus shelter was unveiled at The Shandex Group’s facility in Pickering. The shelter was installed as part of a partnership between DRT and Shandex.
Service updates to the DRT transit network took effect on May 5 as part of the 2025 Annual Service Plan. The full agenda from the Transit Executive Committee meeting is available on the DRT website.
