Farewell Street in Oshawa to close to through-traffic May 18 through December 2026 for reconstruction
Farewell Street (Regional Road 56) in Oshawa will be closed to through-traffic between Wentworth Street East (Regional Road 60) and Harbour Road from May 18 to December 2026 while Durham Region reconstructs the road.
The closure and related lane restrictions are expected to affect drivers, nearby residents and local businesses for more than a year, with the Region advising motorists to use a posted detour and noting that access for local traffic and emergency services will be maintained.
According to Durham Region’s notice, through-traffic will be detoured via Wentworth Street East, Simcoe Street South (Regional Road 2) and Harbour Road.
The Region says local traffic and emergency access will continue during the closure using the detour routes.
In addition to the full closure section, lane restrictions are planned for the duration of the project on Farewell Street between Bloor Street East (Regional Road 22) and Wentworth Street East.
Construction for the overall project is expected to be finished by September 2027, Durham Region says. Weather could affect the schedule.
Durham Region says businesses in the area will remain open throughout construction.
