Federal Funding Announced for Charlotte Street Storm Sewer Project in Peterborough
A downtown Peterborough project will replace the storm sewer along Charlotte Street between Park Street and Water Street, according to an announcement from the City of Peterborough on June 19, 2025. According to a federal government release, the project is supported by an investment of $11,359,152 through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund.
City documents indicate that replacing the sewer is intended to reduce the risk of flooding. In 2004, downtown Peterborough experienced severe rainfall, which led to significant flood damage, disrupted residents' lives, and caused lost income for local businesses.
According to information from the City, the project involves installing a new 100-year capacity sewer to improve water flow and drainage on Charlotte Street. Mayor Jeff Leal stated that the City has worked with federal and provincial governments on stormwater management since the 2004 flood, and that this project continues those efforts in the central area of Peterborough.
Federal figures indicate that since 2018, more than $3.8 billion has been committed to the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund. To date, over $2.9 billion has been announced for more than 115 infrastructure projects across Canada. The Peterborough project is among the initiatives supported through this federal program.
