Federal Government Tables $486.9 Billion in 2025–26 Main Estimates
The federal government tabled the 2025–26 Main Estimates in the House of Commons on May 27, 2025, according to a news release from the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat. The document sets out planned budgetary spending of $486.9 billion for 130 government organizations in the upcoming fiscal year.
These Estimates plan spending on housing, the Canadian Armed Forces, Indigenous communities, dental care, border services, and veterans’ benefits. According to the Treasury Board, transfer payments included in the Estimates total $294.8 billion and are distributed to provinces, territories, organizations, and individuals for purposes such as health care and benefits for elderly Canadians and those with disabilities.
The Treasury Board stated that the 2025–26 Main Estimates include authorities issued under Governor General Special Warrants, which were used to sustain core government functions while Parliament was dissolved. Spending amounts noted in the Estimates are the maximum each federal organization may be authorized to spend, subject to parliamentary approval, according to the release.
