Former Nurse Arrested in Connection With Thefts at Oshawa and Bowmanville Care Homes

A 35-year-old former nurse was arrested on June 6, 2025, in Clarington following a series of break-and-enter incidents at long-term care homes in Oshawa and Bowmanville, according to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

The DRPS reported that investigators from the East Division Criminal Investigations Branch began an investigation on June 3, 2025, after receiving reports that a woman had entered long-term care homes and stolen items from residents' rooms. The suspect was identified during the investigation and apprehended at her residence in Clarington.

Police identified the accused as Kayla Summers, age 35, of Clarington. According to the DRPS, she faces charges that include Break Enter and Commit / Dwelling House, Theft not Exceeding $5000, and Fraud under $5000. Investigators described the suspect as a white female of medium build with red hair, last seen wearing a pink and purple scrub top and dark-colored pants at the time of the reported incidents.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims and have released a photograph of Summers in an effort to identify others affected.

According to the DRPS, all information in their media release is based on the police investigation to date, and the allegations have not been proven in court.
