Henry on brief medical leave; Dan Carter to chair Durham council meetings

The Region of Durham said on Oct. 22 that Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer John Henry is on a brief medical leave. During his absence, Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter will chair Regional Council and Committee of the Whole meetings.

The statement did not provide medical details or a return date. It also did not mention changes to meeting agendas, committee structure, or additional interim appointments.

“Chair Henry looks forward to returning soon,” the Region said in its Oct. 22 statement.

The Region described the leave as brief but did not specify how long Carter will serve in the meeting chair role. According to the statement, Carter will preside over meetings in line with the Acting Regional Chair By-law #59-2022, which the Region cited as the authority for this arrangement.
