Man Arrested in Oshawa After Police Pursuit Early June 1
A Toronto man was arrested in Oshawa and faces several charges after allegedly failing to stop for police early Sunday, June 1, 2025, according to the Durham Regional Police Service.
The case matters to local residents because it involved a police pursuit through Oshawa involving both ground and air police units, raising concerns about impaired and reckless driving in the community.
Police say that at about 1:55 a.m., members of the Tactical Support Unit were traveling eastbound on Highway 401 in Oshawa when they observed a vehicle driving erratically. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle exited the highway and fled northbound on Stevenson Road South. According to police, the Air1 helicopter followed the vehicle until it came to a stop in a green space near Simcoe Street South and Valley Drive. Police report the driver then fled on foot. With the assistance of Air1 providing location updates, ground officers located and arrested the suspect.
Michael Welch, 43, of Toronto, has been charged with impaired operation of a conveyance, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, and operating while prohibited. These are allegations and have not been proven in court, police state.
