Ontario Announces Planning for New Campbellford Memorial Hospital in Trent Hills

The Ontario government announced on May 21, 2025, that planning has begun for a new Campbellford Memorial Hospital in Trent Hills, Northumberland County. According to the province, the Ministry of Health will work with Campbellford Memorial Hospital on plans for the new facility, which is intended to replace the existing hospital.

The current Campbellford Memorial Hospital operates 38 beds in Trent Hills and serves approximately 40,000 residents from Northumberland, Peterborough, and Hastings Counties, according to government figures. Planning for the new hospital is in early stages, and details such as bed numbers and the building's size will be determined during this process.

The Ontario government stated that the new hospital may include a modernized emergency department, a new inpatient medical wing, expanded access to core programs and services, increased inpatient capacity, enhanced infection prevention and control measures, and a healthcare campus offering community support services. The government attributes these plans to the growing and aging population in Northumberland County.

The announcement did not include information on the timeline or the precise location for construction of the new hospital. For the 2024–25 fiscal year, the province reported allocating $202,283 to Campbellford Memorial Hospital through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund, which includes $111,795 from the Exceptional Circumstance Project Grant to upgrade the hospital’s fire alarm system. Province-wide, Ontario plans to invest nearly $60 billion in health infrastructure over the next ten years, including more than 50 major hospital projects and about 3,000 new hospital beds.

Jeff Hohenkerk, President and CEO of Campbellford Memorial Hospital, described the approval of the planning grant as an important milestone. Carrie Hayward, Board Chair of Campbellford Memorial Hospital, said the planning grant would allow the hospital to move forward with developing a new facility to serve the needs of the area.
