Ontario Government Reports Construction Started on East Harbour Transit Hub in Toronto

According to the Ontario government, construction has begun on the East Harbour Transit Hub, a new interchange station in Toronto’s east end. The station is planned to connect the Ontario Line subway with the Lakeshore East and Stouffville GO Transit lines and is projected by the province to serve about 100,000 daily riders. The government states the hub is expected to become Toronto’s second busiest transit station after Union Station.

The project is described by the Ontario government as a joint initiative with the Government of Canada and the City of Toronto. The station is intended to improve rail line connections and reduce congestion at Union Station. This development is part of a broader expansion of public transit infrastructure in the Greater Toronto Area, according to the province.

The Ontario government reports that the major construction contract for the East Harbour Transit Hub was awarded in March 2025 to a joint venture of AtkinsRéalis and Bird Construction, with Hatch Ltd. as the design partner. The province also stated that investment in its GO Expansion program, which includes the East Harbour project, is expected to generate the equivalent of 8,300 jobs annually during the first 12 years of construction and delivery.

The government states that the East Harbour site will include transit facilities along with housing and community spaces as part of the Transit-Oriented Communities initiative. According to Ontario, the project is anticipated to support thousands of new jobs and residential units in the neighbourhood.

Premier Doug Ford said the construction is part of the province’s plan for public transit expansion. Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, stated the hub is intended to provide commuters with additional transit connections. Mayor Olivia Chow noted that the Toronto region added 270,000 new residents last year, according to government figures, pointing to the need for expanded transit networks.

The Ontario government says it is investing $70 billion in public transit, which includes the Ontario Line and other subway expansion projects.
