Ontario Tech and Saskatchewan Polytechnic announce partnership for 11-week online nuclear training in four western provinces

Ontario Tech University in Oshawa and Saskatchewan Polytechnic say they have partnered to deliver Ontario Tech’s Nuclear Career Accelerator—an 11-week online training program—for learners in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The schools announced the partnership April 28.

For people in those four provinces who are looking for nuclear-related training, the announcement outlines who will handle delivery: Saskatchewan Polytechnic will be the exclusive delivery partner in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, while Ontario Tech will deliver the online course from its Ontario campus.

According to Ontario Tech, the 11-week online program is aimed at mid-career engineers and technical professionals entering or working in the nuclear sector. The university said the curriculum includes foundational training in nuclear systems, safety and regulatory frameworks.

The exclusivity arrangement means Saskatchewan Polytechnic will be the only organization delivering the program in the four western provinces under this agreement, according to the announcement.

In the release, Saskatchewan Polytechnic President and CEO Dr. Larry Rosia linked the partnership to plans for nuclear energy in Western Canada.

Ontario Tech President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Steven Murphy said in the announcement that the partnership is meant to expand access to training and support workforce development in Western Canada.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic said the partnership is a step toward a planned Western Canadian Nuclear Training Centre. The polytechnic said the centre is intended to offer training for mining and energy employees who need nuclear-specific skills, technical professionals transitioning into nuclear, and students and recent graduates. Saskatchewan Polytechnic also said the centre is expected to include training tied to small modular reactor projects and regulatory requirements.

The announcement did not provide the program’s price, start date, or expected enrolment.
