Ontario Tech Engineering Students Recognized at 2025 Capstone Competition

More than 350 fourth-year engineering students at Ontario Tech University participated in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science's Capstone Systems Design Exhibition and Competition on April 24, 2025, according to the university. The university reported that over 70 teams presented projects, with evaluations conducted by 15 industry professionals.

The event serves as a significant milestone for graduating engineering students, concluding an eight-month period of work on large-scale capstone projects, the university stated. Teams from several engineering departments participated, with support from the Society of United Professionals and the Professional Engineers of Ontario – Lake Ontario Chapter, according to university information.

The university reported that awards were presented in three departmental categories. In the Automotive and Mechatronics Engineering and Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (AME/MME) category, first place was awarded for a design of an alternative restraint method for wheelchairs on rail transit vehicles. The university awarded second place for an inter-city bus project and third place for a nuclear radiation shielding test apparatus.

In the Electrical, Computer and Software Engineering (ECSE) category, the university reported that the top award went to a blind-person assistant device. Second place was awarded for a power supply for telecom applications, and third place was awarded for a municipal by-law enforcement project.

For the Energy and Nuclear Engineering (ENE) category, the university reported first place went to a team that designed an eVinci microreactor waste processing facility. Second place was awarded for a small test loop for liquid metals, while third place was awarded for a mechanical manipulator for subcritical assembly.

The university listed judges and their affiliations, including SmartONE Solutions, GM Canada, Ontario Power Generation, Cameco Fuel Manufacturing, BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada Inc., Toronto Hydro, Society of United Professionals, Alithya, and LeddarTech.
