Ontario Tech receives new gift for cybersecurity; donor’s lifetime giving tops $1M

On November 21, 2025, Ontario Tech University in Oshawa received a philanthropic gift to support cybersecurity research and education at its Institute for Cybersecurity and Resilient Systems. The donor is a longtime supporter from Durham Region, and the contribution brings their lifetime giving to more than $1 million. The university did not disclose the amount of the latest gift.

The funding will support business-focused cybersecurity initiatives at the institute, expand training for small businesses and community learning opportunities, and provide student support through scholarships and hands-on research.

Upcoming work includes “strategic cybersecurity for business,” using technological, legal, ethical and social approaches to address cybersecurity challenges.

The university plans to integrate real-world cybersecurity case studies into courses, including a new Cybersecurity for Business specialization within the Bachelor of Commerce program.

The Institute for Cybersecurity and Resilient Systems is a collaborative research institute led by Ontario Tech’s Faculty of Business and Information Technology.

Researchers at the institute apply artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in cybersecurity research, with work that includes business policy, system reliability and data protection.

“This contribution is an investment in the digital safety and resilience of our entire community. Thanks to this support, we can expand our efforts to protect vulnerable sectors and create real-world solutions,” said Dr. Carolyn McGregor, dean of the Faculty of Business and Information Technology.

The announcement was linked to Ontario Tech’s Tech with a Conscience campaign.
