Ontario Tech Ridgebacks men's soccer team wins first OUA championship
The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks men's soccer team won the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship for the first time after defeating the York Lions 2-1 on November 2, 2024, at York’s home field. According to Ontario Tech University, the Ridgebacks secured the win with two first-half goals by Erion Metaj.
The OUA championship concludes a playoff run that included four wins over two weeks, beginning with a victory over Nipissing on October 23, followed by away wins at the University of Toronto and McMaster University. This is the second time the Ridgebacks soccer program has claimed a provincial title; the women’s team won the OUA championship in 2016, as stated by the university.
Ontario Tech University reports that the Ridgebacks will compete in the Bruce Power U SPORTS national championship tournament, which takes place from November 7 to 10 at Vaso’s Field in Oshawa. This will mark the first time Ontario Tech has hosted a U SPORTS national championship event. The Ridgebacks are scheduled to play the McGill Redbirds (Montréal) in the quarter-finals.
Other teams participating in the U SPORTS national championship in Oshawa include York University (Toronto), University of New Brunswick (Fredericton), University of British Columbia (Vancouver), St. Francis Xavier University (Antigonish, NS), Mount Royal University (Calgary), and Université de Montréal.
