Ontario Tech University Announces Nuclear Career Accelerator Program for Mid-Career Professionals
Ontario Tech University has announced a 12-week hybrid training program, the Nuclear Career Accelerator, intended for mid-career engineers and technical professionals seeking employment in Canada’s nuclear energy sector. According to the university, the first group of participants is expected to begin in September 2025. Ontario Tech University states that the program is funded by Upskill Canada, an initiative delivered by Palette Skills and supported by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.
The university reports that the program was created to address workforce challenges in the nuclear sector, citing a 30 per cent retirement rate and a projected 20 per cent increase in worker demand. This training is intended for individuals already working in nuclear energy as well as those transitioning from other fields, according to the university.
Ontario Tech University states that the Nuclear Career Accelerator will provide technical instruction in nuclear systems, safety procedures, and regulatory compliance. The program will also include career coaching and job-placement support. The cost is subsidized at $500 per participant. The curriculum is described by the university as covering eight technical skills and more than eighteen professional competencies and was developed in consultation with industry representatives.
Facilities at Ontario Tech University, according to the institution, include what it identifies as Canada’s only Centre for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) with full life-cycle capabilities. The university also reports it is home to the country’s first International Atomic Energy Agency Collaborating Centre, a full-scope CANDU control room simulator, and a proposed subcritical assembly intended to provide hands-on experience with a Class 1 Nuclear Facility when it becomes operational.
Christopher Hall, Director of Continuous Learning at Ontario Tech University, stated in a university release that the partnership with Palette Skills will facilitate industry-driven training for the nuclear workforce. Palette Skills CEO Mark Beckles said the program is designed to meet the needs of the nuclear sector through training developed with industry input.
According to Ontario Tech University, Palette Skills manages Upskill Canada in collaboration with industry and community organizations to provide workforce training.
