Ontario Tech University Establishes AI and Rehabilitation Research Chair with Rinaldi Family Donation
Ontario Tech University announced on April 16, 2025, the establishment of the Rinaldi Research Chair in AI and Rehabilitation within the Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research at the Faculty of Health Sciences. The funding for the chair comes from a gift made by Jason and Riley Rinaldi as part of the university’s Tech with a Conscience campaign.
According to Ontario Tech University, Dr. Carol Cancelliere has been named the inaugural Rinaldi Research Chair. The university states that Dr. Cancelliere's research will focus on artificial intelligence technologies for rehabilitation, including work related to musculoskeletal disorders, arthritis, and concussion recovery.
Ontario Tech University reported that projects under the chair will involve developing AI tools for diagnosis and treatment, with goals including the refinement of diagnoses, improvement of prognoses, personalization of treatment plans, and improving patient outcomes. The university also indicated that remote rehabilitation services may be enhanced through this research.
The university stated that all research activities for the chair will adhere to ethical standards and regulatory guidelines. Ontario Tech University described the Rinaldi family's gift as part of their philanthropic involvement with the university, lasting more than a decade.
