Ontario Tech University Introduces Nuclear Career Accelerator for Mid-Career Professionals
Ontario Tech University has announced a 12-week Nuclear Career Accelerator program designed for mid-career engineers and technical professionals seeking opportunities in Canada’s nuclear sector. Details were published July 15, with the university stating that the first cohorts could begin as early as September 2025.
According to Ontario Tech, the new program addresses a reported 30 per cent expected retirement rate and a projected 20 per cent growth in workforce demand within the nuclear sector. The university developed the program in partnership with Palette Skills, and funding is provided by Upskill Canada and the Government of Canada. Ontario Tech reports a participant cost of $500 per person.
The university says the program will offer technical training in nuclear systems, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance, as well as career coaching and job-placement support. Over 12 weeks, participants will work on eight specific technical skills and more than eighteen professional competencies, according to information released by Ontario Tech. The program is open to professionals with or without prior nuclear industry experience.
Ontario Tech reports that its campus houses the Centre for Small Modular Reactors, an International Atomic Energy Agency Collaborating Centre, and a CANDU control room simulator for educational use. The university states it has proposed a subcritical assembly, described as a teaching and research reactor that operates below the level needed to sustain a nuclear chain reaction. Ontario Tech says that, once operational, this facility would provide experience with a Class 1 Nuclear Facility for students, researchers, and industry partners.
Christopher Hall, Director of Continuous Learning at Ontario Tech University, stated in the announcement that the partnership with Palette Skills is intended to deliver industry-driven training for the nuclear workforce. Palette Skills’ CEO, Mark Beckles, identified Ontario Tech as a training delivery partner for Upskill Canada within the announcement.
