Ontario Tech University Launches $250 Million 'Tech with a Conscience' Fundraising Campaign
Ontario Tech University in Oshawa announced on November 13, 2024, that it is launching a fundraising campaign called "Tech with a Conscience." The university stated the campaign aims to raise $250 million to support research, expand campus facilities, and fund student programs.
The fundraising campaign is intended to help Ontario Tech University increase its research capacity, support student needs, and assist with campus expansion. According to the university, the funds are planned to be used for projects including artificial intelligence and clean energy.
Ontario Tech reported that it produced a video to launch the campaign, which features artificial intelligence, computer-generated imagery, and live-action segments including students, employees, and alumni. The university stated these technologies were used with direct involvement from members of the Ontario Tech community.
In the official announcement, Dr. Steven Murphy, President and Vice-Chancellor, said, “Tech with a Conscience embodies our belief that technological progress must be guided by the conscious application of ethical choices—decisions we (as students and educators) make that ensure technology serves the greater good.”
James Barnett, Vice-President of Advancement, said, “More than a fundraising campaign, Tech with a Conscience is a movement to empower innovation, nurture future leaders, and tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time.”
Ontario Tech stated that donor contributions have supported the launch of the campaign.
