Ontario Tech University Schedules Memorial Ceremony for National Day of Remembrance
Ontario Tech University in Oshawa, Ontario, scheduled a memorial ceremony for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on Friday, December 6, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Energy Research Centre Atrium. According to the university, the event was to be livestreamed on its website.
The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women was established by Parliament in 1991 to mark the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique de Montréal massacre, where 14 women were killed. The day is observed to commemorate those lost and others who have experienced gender-based violence.
Ontario Tech University stated that the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Women in Engineering Sub-Society organized the ceremony. Plans included lighting candles, reading the victims’ names, holding a moment of silence, and presentations from members of the university community.
The university advised that mental health services are available for students through the Office of Student Life, and that faculty and staff can access support via the university’s Wellness at Work website.
