Ontario Tech University to Launch Early Alert System for Students in September

Ontario Tech University will introduce an Early Alert System (EAS) for students in September, the university announced. The EAS is an online tool that uses indicators such as low grades or missed assignments to identify students who may be experiencing academic challenges, according to Ontario Tech. The university stated that when students are identified by the system, academic advisors contact them to offer support.

Ontario Tech reported that the EAS was piloted during the Spring/Summer semester in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Faculty of Science. The university stated the purpose of the system is to address concerns before they affect a student’s academic progress or well-being. Ontario Tech said that beginning in September, the EAS will apply to all students at the university.

Dan Crouse, Director of Academic Advising and project lead, said the pilot resulted in several students receiving assistance who had not previously accessed support. He cited one case where a student, unsure how to get back on track academically, met with an advisor after being flagged by the system.

According to Ontario Tech, advisors reach out for individual check-ins, conducted online or in person. These meetings are intended to identify the reasons for a student's difficulties and may include referrals to campus services such as Student Mental Health Services or the Mental Health Peer Mentor Program.

Ontario Tech reported that the development and pilot of the EAS were supported by a $150,000 gift from the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation. The planned university-wide launch follows the initial test in two faculties.
