Ontario Tech University to Lead Next Phase of Project Arrow Electric Vehicle

Ontario Tech University in Oshawa announced on March 31, 2025, that it will continue as the lead academic institution for Project Arrow as the project moves into its next phase. According to the university, Project Arrow aims to develop a Canadian-made zero-emission electric vehicle and has received $11 million in new funding from federal and provincial sources for the Arrow 2.0 phase.

Ontario Tech says students from engineering, computer science, and business programs participate directly in the project’s research activities, working with partners in the automotive industry. The university reports that 2024 automotive engineering graduate Andrew Genovese, who contributed to the first phase of Project Arrow, has been hired by the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association and will continue his involvement in the second phase.

According to Ontario Tech, development and testing of Arrow 2.0 will take place at the ACE Core Research and Testing Facility in Oshawa, which includes a wind tunnel capable of simulating extreme Canadian weather conditions. Features planned for Arrow 2.0, as reported by the university, include systems that use artificial intelligence and machine learning, a fully electric drivetrain, autonomous driving capability, a digital dashboard, touchscreens, and a chassis produced with 3D-printing technology at the facility. The university states that the chassis will undergo crash testing to assess safety and durability. Ontario Tech adds that the vehicle will be constructed with materials it describes as environmentally friendly, and that its battery is designed for longer-term performance.

Ontario Tech states that project leaders intend to present the Arrow 2.0 vehicle at Hannover Messe, an industrial trade fair in Germany, from March 31 to April 4. According to the university, the project’s development will continue through 2028, focusing on areas such as additive manufacturing, aerodynamics, battery chemistry, and cybersecurity.
