Orono Library Heritage Plaque Ceremony Set for May 24

The Clarington Library, Museums & Archives (CLMA) will hold an unveiling ceremony for the Orono Library’s Heritage Designation Plaque at 127 Church Street in Orono on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 10 a.m. According to CLMA, members of the Library Board, the Municipality of Clarington’s Heritage Committee, and members of Council are expected to attend.

CLMA has stated that the ceremony will mark the recognition of the Orono Library building’s heritage designation. The Municipality of Clarington, according to CLMA, identifies and conserves heritage properties, and 127 Church Street is listed as a primary resource on the Municipal Cultural Heritage Resources List for its Italianate architectural style. CLMA also reports that the Clarington Heritage Committee and municipal staff recommended the property’s designation under the Ontario Heritage Act to preserve its cultural significance.

According to CLMA, the house was built for John Waddell, who founded the Orono Furniture Factory in 1868 and was half-owner of the Orono Cheese Factory. CLMA further states that the property became part of the Township of Clarke Public Library Board in 1969, served as the Clarke Museum until 1985, and now operates as the Orono Library.

CLMA is also organizing an Orono Walking Tour on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. CLMA reports that the tour will feature the history of downtown Orono, including notable buildings and residents such as the Waddell family and the current Orono Library.

CLMA advises that all of its locations will be closed on Monday, May 19, 2025, for Victoria Day, and states that regular hours will remain in effect on Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18.
