Oshawa Man Charged in Investment Fraud Scheme Involving $2.5 Million
A 23-year-old Oshawa man has been arrested and charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000 after allegedly collecting more than $2.5 million through an investment scheme, according to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).
The investigation concerns allegations that the suspect misrepresented himself as a financial trader and promised high returns to two individuals, leading them to transfer large sums of money under false pretenses.
The DRPS said its Financial Crimes Unit began investigating in June 2024 after receiving reports from the two victims. Police say the suspect claimed he could guarantee investment returns using the platform 'Interactive Brokers.'
Between March 2023 and March 2024, police allege the victims created 'Interactive Brokers' accounts and allowed the suspect full access to manage trading. Police further allege that the suspect convinced the victims to transfer funds by driving high-end vehicles and providing forged statements showing investment profits.
Investigators stated the funds were ultimately used to pay for an extravagant lifestyle.
Alex Noah Pekala, age 23, of Oshawa, was arrested by Financial Crimes Unit investigators on September 21, 2025. He was held for a bail hearing.
