Over 20,000 Attend Canada Day Event at Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex in Clarington

More than 20,000 residents attended the Canada Day event at Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex in Clarington on July 1, according to the Municipality of Clarington. The municipality said the event featured live music, local vendors, various activities, and a fireworks display to end the evening.

The municipality stated that a Colour Party was presented by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178 Bowmanville to begin the festivities. Officials in attendance included Mayor Adrian Foster and members of Clarington Council, federal Members of Parliament Jamil Jivani (Bowmanville-Oshawa North) and Philip Lawrence (Northumberland-Clark), Durham MPP Todd McCarthy, Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board Trustee Kathleen Flynn, and Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic School Board Trustee Joshua Glover.

Mayor Foster expressed thanks to volunteers, residents, local businesses, and municipal staff for organizing and supporting the event, according to the municipal release.

The celebration included the “Together, we are Clarington” interactive station, where residents could sign pledges referred to by the municipality as “Be the change.”

The Seeds of Hope Project’s Knock Down Hunger Challenge took place inside the arena, where the municipality said 9,596 cereal boxes were arranged in a domino chain and later collected for Feed the Need in Durham.

The municipality said sponsors for the event included the Government of Canada and Ontario Power Generation’s The Power for Change Project.
