Pistachio Sweets Recalled in Ottawa and Vancouver Over Salmonella Concerns: CFIA
A recall has been issued for several pistachio-containing sweets sold in Ottawa and Vancouver due to possible Salmonella contamination, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
The CFIA reports that Salmonella presents a greater risk to older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems, who may experience serious and sometimes deadly infections if exposed.
The recalled items include Pistachio Baklava and Pistachio Butter Cookies from Alkadour Sweets. These products were sold at Carlingwood Shopping Centre, Bayshore Shopping Centre, and Billings Bridge Shopping Centre in Ottawa up to and including June 10, 2025. Additionally, 300 g and 600 g sizes of Baklava not branded under Alkadour Sweets were sold at Mr. Kaak, 1020 Pleasant Park Road, Ottawa, up to and including August 8, 2025. In Vancouver, British Columbia, Pistachio Paklava served at Kamo Bakery, 5552 Victoria Drive, is included in the recall for purchases made from April 7 to August 11, 2025.
The CFIA states that the recall follows findings from its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. The Public Health Agency of Canada is also investigating an outbreak of human illness related to these products.
According to the CFIA, food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Symptoms associated with Salmonella may include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. The CFIA emphasizes that older adults, pregnant women, young children, and people with weakened immune systems are at increased risk of severe symptoms and complications.
The food safety investigation is ongoing. The CFIA has indicated that further recalls may occur if additional products are identified, and is verifying that affected products are being removed from sale.
