Police Investigate Anti-Muslim Graffiti on Ajax Waterfront Trail in September 2025

Police are investigating after anti-Muslim graffiti was found on a bench along the waterfront trail near Lakeview Boulevard and Poplar Avenue in Ajax on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, according to the Durham Regional Police Service. Officers from West Division responded to a report about the graffiti at that location.

The Durham Regional Police Service said this is the second time graffiti of this kind has been reported at the same location, with a similar incident occurring in early August. The police are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed either incident or who has relevant details.

Durham Regional Police Service stated that hate crime is not a distinct charge under the Criminal Code of Canada, but certain offences can be prosecuted as hate-related if hate motivation is established. Police said they will consult with the Crown Attorney’s Office to determine whether hate was an aggravating factor, which could impact sentencing if charges are laid.

According to the Durham Regional Police Service, acts that target or instill fear in any community group are treated seriously, and the impact on the broader community, particularly the Muslim community, is recognized.

The investigation is ongoing. Police request that anyone with information contact Constable Bartley of West Division or provide anonymous tips through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers. Additional details about hate-motivated incidents are available on the Durham Regional Police Service’s website.
