Police Investigating Attempted Bank Robbery at Equity Credit Union in Ajax

Police are searching for three suspects following what they describe as a violent attempted bank robbery at Equity Credit Union, located at 1-299 Kingston Road East in Ajax, on Monday, June 2, 2025. According to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), the incident occurred at approximately 8:40 a.m. when West Division officers responded to the scene after reports of a robbery.

This incident is notable due to the use of force and a weapon during the attempted robbery. The event has prompted police to request assistance from the public as the investigation continues.

Police said an employee was approaching the bank's front doors when suspects grabbed her and physically forced their way inside. According to DRPS, a second employee was held at gunpoint while the suspects demanded access to the bank vault. Police report that the suspects were unable to open the vault but did take personal items and cash from the victims before fleeing the area in a black sedan. DRPS stated that one victim sustained physical injuries and was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

The suspects are described by police as follows: Suspect #1 is a brown male, wearing a black mask, beige sweater, light pants, black gloves, and black running shoes. Suspect #2 is also described as a brown male of heavy build, wearing a black mask, black jacket, black pants, and dark running shoes. DRPS said that the third suspect is believed to have been the driver of the vehicle, but no description is available for this individual.

Investigators are asking anyone with dashcam, cellphone, or surveillance footage, or with information about the incident, to contact the DRPS Robbery Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5355. Anonymous tips can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submitted online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca. According to police, tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.

DRPS notes that all information released is based on an ongoing police investigation and that the allegations have not been proven in court.
