Police Seek Public Assistance After Hate-Motivated Graffiti in Whitby
Investigators from Central West Division are asking for the public’s help to identify a suspect connected to several incidents of hate-motivated graffiti in Whitby that occurred on May 20, 2025.
According to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), multiple locations in Whitby were affected by graffiti featuring language described as offensive and having a significant impact on the local Muslim community. Police said the graffiti was promptly removed and the investigation is ongoing, with the DRPS Hate Crime Unit providing assistance.
The incidents occurred in two specific areas: between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on Thickson Road South, between Consumers Drive and Dundas Street East, and between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. on Dundas Street, between Hopkins Street and Annes Street. Investigators are seeking any video footage, including security or dashcam recordings, from these areas during the specified times.
A photo of the suspect has been released and is available on the DRPS website. The suspect is described as a male with a slim build, last seen wearing a dark-coloured jacket and pants.
