Pumpkin Seed Recall Issued for Toronto Stores Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination
Several types of pumpkin seeds sold at Toronto stores have been recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination, according to a notice from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued on May 12, 2025.
The recall applies to certain pumpkin seed products sold at three Toronto retailers between March and May 2025. The CFIA is advising the public in Ontario to check if they have purchased any of the affected products.
According to the CFIA, the following products are part of the recall:
- Orasta Organic Pumpkin Seeds, 250 g, UPC 7 28795 59321 6, sold at Fiesta Farm, 200 Christie St., Toronto, from April 17 to May 10, 2025.
- Organic European Pumpkin Seeds (variable sizes, no UPC), sold at Beaches Natural Foods, 1947 Queen St E, Toronto, from March 2025 to May 8, 2025.
- Fine Goods Wholesome Raw European Pumpkin Seeds Organic (variable sizes, UPCs starting with 0205069), sold at The Sweet Potato, 108 Vine Ave Unit B, Toronto, from April 24 to May 6, 2025.
The CFIA states that this recall was triggered by a similar recall in another country. As of the announcement, there have been no reported illnesses associated with these products.
The agency notes that food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Groups such as young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may face serious and sometimes deadly infections, according to the CFIA. Healthy people may have symptoms like fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.
The CFIA advises the public not to consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute the recalled pumpkin seeds. Any recalled products should be disposed of or returned to the place of purchase, according to the agency.
A food safety investigation is ongoing, and the CFIA is verifying that recalled products are being removed from stores in Ontario. The agency also indicates that further recalls may occur if additional risks are found.
