Recall Issued for Mount Becher Buffalo Medium Cheese Due to Listeria Risk
Mount Becher Buffalo Medium Cheese from Natural Pastures Cheese Company is being recalled as of July 21, 2025, due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The recall affects variable-sized packages from batch number 854 179, which were distributed in British Columbia and Ontario.
The CFIA reported that routine test results led to the recall and has classified it as a Class 1 recall, the most serious category. The agency stated that there have been no reported illnesses linked to the recalled product as of the date of the announcement.
The CFIA explained that food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can cause illness. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. The agency notes that pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk. In pregnant women, infection can lead to complications such as premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or stillbirth, and severe cases can be fatal.
The CFIA advises checking for batch number 854 179 on packages of Mount Becher Buffalo Medium Cheese and not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the affected cheese. The agency recommends discarding the cheese or returning it to the location where it was purchased.
According to the CFIA, it is conducting a food safety investigation and verifying that the recalled cheese is being removed from the marketplace. The agency noted that additional recalls may occur if other products are found to be affected.
