Region of Durham Reaffirms Services for Older Adults Ahead of Elder Abuse Awareness Day

The Region of Durham announced on June 11 in Whitby that it is maintaining support services for older adults at risk of abuse, ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.

According to the Region, elder abuse can include financial abuse, neglect, verbal and emotional abuse, physical and sexual abuse, and ageism. The Region employs an Older Adult Safety Advisor to respond to direct inquiries from older adults, family, or community members who have concerns about the safety and well-being of an older adult.

The Older Adult Safety Advisor works with Durham Region Social Services and Durham Regional Police Service to provide advocacy, assistance, and guidance. There is no cost for support from the Advisor.

Further information about elder abuse and available supports can be found on the Region of Durham’s website.
