Region of Durham Sludgehammers Win Provincial Operations Challenge
According to the Region of Durham, the Sludgehammers, a four-person team of wastewater professionals, won the 2025 provincial Operations Challenge at the Water Environment Association of Ontario conference in London, Ontario. The team is made up of captain Adam Hubers, Kirk Gonsalves, Matt Moffat, and Kevin Round, and is coached by Andy Griffin.
The annual Operations Challenge tests skills necessary for operating and maintaining wastewater facilities, with teams from across Ontario competing in five specific events: process control, laboratory testing, pump maintenance, collection, and safety. The Region of Durham states that the Sludgehammers took first place in the process control and safety events, and placed second in laboratory, collections, and pump maintenance, making them overall champions in the competition.
The Region described the event as a way to test essential wastewater management skills and noted the Sludgehammers’ achievements through an official announcement on its website.
