Spring weight limits begin March 9 on some Durham Region roads
Durham Region will impose spring weight limits on designated Regional roads from March 9 to April 30, with the end date subject to change based on weather and road conditions. The limits affect vehicles heavier than 5,000 kilograms (five tonnes) per axle.
The seasonal limits are intended to reduce road damage during the spring thaw, when pavement on some roads can temporarily lose strength.
The Regional Municipality of Durham and local area municipalities enforce the restrictions under the Highway Traffic Act and Durham Region By-law 26-2018.
Signs will be placed on Regional roads where the weight restrictions apply. A map of affected roads is available at durham.ca/WeightRestrictions.
Most public utility and emergency vehicles are exempt from the weight restrictions.
Durham Region said the final day of the restriction period may be adjusted after periodic reviews of road and weather conditions near the end of the season.
