Sunderland Watermain Cleaning Scheduled for Overnight Hours in September

The Region of Durham has contracted IQ Environmental to clean watermains in Sunderland between September 8 and 19, 2025. Residents will receive a hand-delivered notice from the Region 24 to 48 hours before cleaning is scheduled to begin on their street. The work will be carried out during overnight hours, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., according to the Region.

The Region states that this work is part of its regular water supply system maintenance program. Notices are being delivered in advance, and the work will take place overnight to reduce inconvenience to residents.

The Region advises residents to keep a supply of water on hand for drinking, cooking, and general use during the cleaning procedure. Residents are also advised by the Region to close the shut-off valve at the water meter before the cleaning begins, to keep water from entering the home. If the valve cannot be closed, the Region instructs that no water should be used during the cleaning period, including for flushing toilets, using furnace-mounted humidifiers, or backwashing water softeners. According to the Region, using water during the cleaning operation could allow material to enter internal plumbing and may cause blockages.

After the cleaning is complete, the Region asks residents to turn on a cold water tap and let it run for about five minutes before using hot water. No additional instructions or information have been announced beyond the hand-delivered notices.
