Teen Charged in Connection with Vehicle Arsons in Whitby and Oshawa

A 17-year-old male from Toronto has been charged with arson in connection with vehicle fires in Whitby and Oshawa, according to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS). The youth was held for a bail hearing, and police report that the investigation is ongoing as they attempt to identify additional suspects.

This case is significant for local residents because 17 vehicles were set on fire in Whitby and a tow truck was burned in Oshawa, creating concern over public safety and property damage in both communities. Police are asking anyone with information to assist their ongoing investigation.

DRPS stated that officers were dispatched on Monday, February 17, 2025, at approximately 7:40 p.m. to the area of Hopkins Street and Nichol Avenue in Whitby following reports of vehicles on fire. Whitby Fire extinguished the fires, and no injuries were reported.

According to DRPS, a separate incident occurred on Monday, February 24, 2025, at around 1:30 a.m. in Oshawa. Officers responded to Kentucky Derby Way and Britannia Avenue West, where a tow truck had been set on fire. No injuries were reported in this incident either.

Police say they are looking for three suspects related to the Whitby incidents.
