Temperance Street in Bowmanville to close overnight Aug. 11–12 for Veterans’ Crosswalk replacement

Temperance Street in Bowmanville is set to close overnight between King Street and Church Street from 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, until about 6 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, while crews replace the damaged Veterans’ Crosswalk.

The closure affects a central block in downtown Bowmanville and may change overnight driving routes in the area while the work is underway. The Municipality of Clarington says poor weather may affect the installation date.

According to the municipality, posted signs will direct drivers to alternate routes during the closure.

The Veterans’ Crosswalk was installed in fall 2025 and experienced significant wear over the winter months.

Council approved replacing the crosswalk through Staff Report PDS-051-26. The replacement will use a simplified design and an alternative material that the municipality says is more durable and better suited to winter maintenance.

The municipality consulted Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178 on the updated design, which uses the commemorative crosswalk template provided by the Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command.

The municipality says the crosswalk is being replaced at no cost to the municipality following durability issues with the original material.
