Times Higher Education ranks Ontario Tech 801–1000; Shanghai lists Energy Science Top 100; international applications up 63%

Times Higher Education ranks Ontario Tech University in Oshawa in the 801–1000 band worldwide and 144th among young universities—second in Canada for 2024—while the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects lists the school in the global Top 100 and No. 2 in Canada for Energy Science and Engineering. The university also reports a 63 percent year-over-year increase in international undergraduate applications.

The figures come from two separate ranking programs: Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings and Shanghai’s subject-specific tables. THE evaluates institutions overall; Shanghai assesses performance by discipline.

In THE’s listings, Ontario Tech appears in the 801–1000 band globally. THE places the university at No. 144 in its Young University Rankings, which it notes is second among Canadian institutions for 2024.

In Shanghai’s subject rankings, Ontario Tech is Top 100 worldwide and No. 2 in Canada for Energy Science and Engineering. It ranks in the Top 200 worldwide and Top 10 in Canada for Mechanical Engineering, and in the Top 500 worldwide and No. 24 in Canada for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, according to the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.

In a December 12 university statement, President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Steven Murphy said, “These rankings highlight the impact of our faculty and students.”

In the same statement, Ontario Tech said international undergraduate applications rose 63 percent in one year. Students from more than 80 countries attend the university, according to Ontario Tech.
