Tree Preservation Plan for Historic Red Oak at Beech Avenue
The General Government Committee of Clarington discussed the preservation plan for a historic Red Oak tree located at 21 Beech Avenue during their meeting on November 29, 2021. The tree, which is estimated to be 288 years old, was highlighted by Rick McEachern as a significant symbol of the town's history, having been present for 12 generations of First Nations and Bowmanville pioneers. McEachern urged the committee to save the tree and suggested that it be designated as a site of historic significance under the Ontario Heritage Act.
The committee approved a resolution to carry out the tree preservation plans as outlined in Report PWD-030-21, which was completed by Del Cressman. The preservation plan is estimated to cost $12,000 and will be funded from the Self-Insured Losses Reserve. Additionally, the matter of designating the tree under the Ontario Heritage Act was referred to the Clarington Heritage Committee for further discussion. All interested parties will be informed of the Council’s decision regarding the preservation plan.
