Twenty-Five New Officers Graduate from Durham Regional Police Service in Ajax
Twenty-five new officers were welcomed to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) during a graduation ceremony held in Ajax on August 18, according to a DRPS news release dated August 19.
This event marks the introduction of a new tradition for recruits, according to DRPS, with each graduate receiving a DRPS Recruit Challenge Coin. The coin, engraved with the Oath of Office, was presented to each recruit prior to the ceremony.
Chief Peter Moreira formally welcomed the graduating class and presented each officer with their badge, according to DRPS. The ceremony featured performances by the DRPS Pipes and Drums and the DRPS Choir, according to DRPS.
According to DRPS, the recruits recited the Declaration of Membership during the event. Constable Jacob Bruce, chosen as valedictorian, delivered remarks on behalf of the graduating class and thanked families for their support during training, according to DRPS.
According to DRPS, Constable Bruce also received the Allan D. Christiansen Memorial Award. DRPS reported that this honour is voted on by fellow recruits and recognizes leadership, positivity, commitment to fitness, and dedication to volunteerism.
DRPS stated that the new officers will now work with coach officers in various platoons across Durham Region to gain frontline experience.
According to DRPS, the ceremony also included a presentation of badges to three Police Service Dogs—PSD Kobe, PSD Koa, and PSD Mack.
