Whitby E-bike Collision Results in Death of 88-Year-Old Man

An 88-year-old man died in hospital on May 15 after a collision involving an e-bike and two vehicles in Whitby, according to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

The incident occurred on May 2 at about 10:20 a.m., when an enclosed single rider e-bike was travelling south on Lake Ridge Road North. Police said the e-bike was struck by a southbound Jeep Wrangler, causing it to cross the centre line, where it was then hit by a northbound Hyundai Velostar. The e-bike operator was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre with life-threatening injuries. No other parties in the incident reported physical injuries, according to DRPS.

Investigators from the DRPS Traffic Services Branch – Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene. The area of Lake Ridge Road North and Taunton Road was closed for several hours while police collected evidence.

Police have asked anyone with information about the incident or who witnessed the collision to contact Detective Constable Rayne of the Collision Investigation Unit. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers, and tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward, according to police.
